The next Fairfax Streets for People is
Sunday, October 13, 2019, 10am - 4pm
The vision behind Fairfax’s Streets for People is to create community resiliency and positive spirit! It is a celebration of what makes Fairfax unique, and a fun opportunity to stimulate our local economy.
“It is the diversity of people in a common space which allows for a rich community fabric in which each citizen is a thread.” -Renee Goddard, Sustainable Fairfax Vice President
This open streets event is modeled after the successful Ciclovia program in Bogata, Columbia which closes 70 miles of streets to cars every Sunday. Two million participants each week are given a safe place to ride bicycles, dance, eat and celebrate a city rejuvenated by its people. Gil Penalosa, founder of Ciclovia, describes open streets events as
“releasing the energy of the streets back to the people."
Hundreds of cities around the world and across the US now feature their own versions of car -free weekends. According to "City Repair" in Portland Oregon, the goal is to: "take back the public realm and create memorable beautiful vibrant places where people want to gather and participate in the community. ”
Studies show that local businesses benefit from increased pedestrian and bicycle traffic along the commercial routes.
